Snowy and windy day in New York City (Forrest Hills).

We ate Atuthentic Cuban food at Victor's Cafe in Times Square. We both had delicious steaks. I had the $10 churros for dessert.

After dinner we went to a dress rehearsal of "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" with James Earl Jones as Big Daddy. The acting was great. The set and lighting could have been better.

That's what Punxsutawney Phil predicted when he saw his shadow this morning. This year, his prediction will affect us because... we have a real winter. I don't believe Phil. It's been a mild winter so far. Only a few days with snow.

The movie Groundhog's day was on. I watched it in HD. This movie is becoming one of my favorite movies.

Ensenada Cruise

We went on a cruise to Ensenada cruise to Mexcico on Carnival Cruise lines. For the most part the cruise was great. Valerie was sick (cold). We didn't get sea sick from the motion and did not need to take any medication for it. Lots of food, but the food was ok. It wasn't great.

We wanted to go horseback riding in Ensenada, but got rained out. Bummer.

I didn't want to pay for the outrageous internet rates on the ship. So when we were in Ensenada, I paid $1.50 for a newspaper to look up a Lakers score. Lakers beat Philly.

We went to this little shop on the port. It was raining so we didn't want to go to town.

There was a $10 sale in this shop on the ship. It was packed with women. Valerie (the super shopper) gave up because it was hot and she couldn't move.

We were on the official cruise video. They played it in our room to preview. I just took a photo of the video.

The hydrangea pot didn't have any drainage. After it rained and the temperature dropped, ice started to form. I've brought the pot inside just to melt the ice and dry it out. Hopefully the hydrangea I brought on the road trip from California to Connecticut didn't die.

Suppose to melt the ice on the windshield. I think it also adds a layer to protect the windshield from gathering ice on it. We'll see how well this works.

Light snow then sleet

We woke up Yesterday morning to snow. It was very light but still made the black pavement gray. At night there was sleet. I guess that's rain that's really really cold. What happens is the ground gets wet and then freezes. This creates a layer of ice on everything. In order to walk, you gotta shuffle your feet because there is no traction. Valerie was driving and the car skid.

My 17-inch's backlight inverter went out. So instead of buying a new $500 tv, I bought a new inverter for $80. I was able to take the monitor apart and replace the broken board. First time I've ever fixed a TV. Parts and info here.

Central Park fall foliage. The park was absolutely beautiful. Most of the leaves in the park were yellow. Pictures never do justice, but hopefully this will give you a sense of what it's like.

Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade 2007

We barely made our 4:40 am (yes, that time is correct). We ran from the car and jumped on the train with about a minute to spare. We had to buy our tickets on the train which cost $5 more. After running we were wide awake... but that didn't last long.

Valerie getting her site lines ready for the parade. We arrived in NYC around 6 am. The parade didn't start until 9 am, but we had to get there early to get a good spot. By the time we got there, people were about 3 deep from the street. We settled for sitting on top of a wall at 65th and Central Park West. We had a great view of the balloons, but not the band or the acts on the ground.

The Macy's star ballons. The crowd swelled as the parade started. The weather was perfect. 60 degrees, blue skies and no wind.

In the house, there is a kitchen vent at the top of the stove. I didn't realize how big a hole this was to the outside until one day i could feel the cold air near the vent. All this warm air in the house is going right out this hole. I gotta figure a way to cover it up. So i wonder what Macgyver would do.

I went to home depot, bought some insulation, foam seal and self adhesive magnets. Took about 10 minutes to put together. Works like a charm. Easy to put up and remove, while blocking the cold air from coming in.

New thermostat

Since the gas bills are gonna be really high... we gotta find every way to save money. One way is to have a programmable thermostat. We can set the night time temperature 65 degrees when we're sleeping in and have electric heaters in the room. The whole house doesn't need to be heated. Then at 6:45am, the temperature is set to be at 72 so we can wake up to a warm house. There are 4 different settings per day.

Installing it was not very hard overall. The hardest part was to try to figure out what wires go where. The wires weren't color coded or labeled. I looked up some info online and found a website that described which wires went where. I had to look this info up on my iPhone since I turned off the power to the house, which turned off my cable modem. The iPhone to the rescue again.

Went down to New York to see Shakespeare's Cymbeline. I enjoyed the play, the costumes and the set. Took us about 1 hr and 45 mins to get there. Filled up before driving and a gallon of gas was $3.19!!!

Yes. Finally got the satellite dish mounted. It's almost perfect. I got 3 of 5 signals to be 90% or higher. The other two the best I can get is 75%. That's because there are some pine trees blocking it. When the wind blows the tree, the signals goes up and down.

I went to Home Depot to pick up some plants for gardening. What I saw was pretty sad sight. Most of the garden was empty. Plants were 50% off. Mostly rose bushes were available. I did buy some tulips for planting, but they won't sprout until Spring. Spring seems so far away.

I haven't been to the gym since the beginning of August. Signed up for a year long gym membership at Payne Whitney Gym. PWG is a part of Yale University.

I'm starting off slowly so today I rode the stationary bike, lifted some weights and shots some hoops. Check out the photo of the court below. I was looking at some of the sports they have that I might try... basketball, badminton, squash, ultimate frisbee, fishing, kayaking...

2 year wedding anniversary in NYC

We took the Metro Rail North Train down to NYC. It's about $13 each way per person. The ride takes about 1 hr and 40 mins.
We ate at Brasserie 8 1/2 on 57th street. In front of the building is a huge red #9. You can see them in the photos. The restaurant was excellent. I had the rib-eye steak. Valerie had her usual filet mignon. They gave us complementary champagne since it was our anniversary. For desert we went with ice cream. They made miniature ice cream cones and popsicle sticks. We would have love to take longer than the hour and a half but had to rush to get to the Tony award winning musical "Spring Awakening."

New name for the blog.

Starting Oct. 4, 2007 the blog has a new name. "The Northeast Blog." (Until we think of a better name). No longer will we be covering the home improvements of 199 North Magnolia Avenue. We have a new adventure in New Haven, CT.

We will be sharing our experience of the Northeast from people who have lived in O.C. for most of their lives.

Bought 1200 sq foot from Costco on Saturday (7/16). It weighed about 1500 lbs. Valerie and I lifted about that much each because we had to load the U-haul truck and unload it in the house.

Finally got around to cutting the screws 1/4 inch because they were too long. Now we can put the handles on the kitchen cabinets. The hinges are scheduled to arrive today.

3 hours of sanding later, I began to wonder who's great idea this was... Oh, wait, it was mine. Lucky for me, since Rick was not going to have any part of it, we had decided on not sanding the kitchen cabinets since I had spent 4 hours on just one door. But there was still the stair rail which was badly scratched up and needed a new coat of stain. I guess I could be like Rick and not care either way, but I guess I do care... too damn much. So 3 hours later, with sawdust coming out of my nose, I finished sanding down the rail... tomorrow's stain day, and hopefully it won't be as painful.

HoBart

I was a bit worried about HoBart (the kitty) not adjusting well to the move. On his first day here, he would find whatever nearest, dark corner he could find and curl himself in as far as he could. Bribing him with a treat would not even get the slightest reaction. He would just stare straight ahead and ignore me... I really thought that he was mad at me and that he would be so traumatized that he would turn into one of those kitties that spend all day hiding and only come out when no one is around. What had happened to the black fuzz ball of rambunctious, hyperactive energy that was HoBart? Fortunately, it only took him a couple days of deep exploring until he soon claimed the house as his, proclaimed himself king and named us his faithful followers again. Of all the new places around his new kingdom, he has found favorite stake-out spots at the master bedroom window sill which is nice and wide to accomodate his, uh, gait, and at the top of the stairs where he can spy any intruders. And lucky for us, he has approved the new couch.

Painting sucks... I feel like I'm just watching the paint dry... I have 15 cabinet doors to paint and by tomorrow, hopefully, 8 will be dry--on both sides. The Home Depot has become my second home. I go there just about every day. I should be on a first name basis with the entire crew by next week. I feel like such a butch chick--jeans caked with paint, hiking boots, sportsbra and tank top, hair pulled back and no make-up. I dumped the whole purse thing and just carry a small cigarette case that holds my credit cards and I.D., to make it easier to carry paints and supplies as I shop. Today I put in a little more effort and put on some make-up and sort of did my hair. I needed to feel feminine again.

Went to Ace Hardware in Fullerton and asked the sales person if they had something stronger than Drano. They had the "stuff" Alana suggested getting. The sales person said, "you want the acid." He went to a back room and got a white container (below) covered in a plastic bag. The acid was $10 bucks.

Painting kitchen cabinets

Valerie started to sand the kitchen cabinets on Monday in order for us to restain them. We realized this was going to take really really really long. We decided it would be better to paint them. She painted them today and most of it went well, until she poured the bucket of diluted paint from rinsing the brushes into the sink and it backed up. Not sure if it's from the paint or if it was an existing problem. Tried two types of Drano and no success. Alana suggested going to ace to buy a more powerful liquid... stay tuned.

Moving: part 2

We are 95% moved in as of Sunday, June 26, 2005. With help from Rookie and Sticky and one huge-ass U-haul we got most of the heavy stuff. Valerie has a ton of clothes ("I'm a costume designer... what do you expect").

The cat didn't take the move very well on the first day here. He was hiding and was scared of every sound.

Today, we unpacked some boxes and there is a lot more room now to walk around.

Cable guy came over, took longer than I though it would, but he finally got the cable modem set up. During the time the cable guy was cover, the locksmith came to re-key the locks. Took him about 30 minutes. The cable guy finally figured it out and internet works fine... it's a little slower than time warner.
